What’s the difference between a ruleset template and Adyard’s standard automation? The standard automation, the Bid Optimizer, Bid Finder, Keyword Harvesting and Keyword Remover, runs daily based on fixed parameters that you set per campaign. That automation always works the same way and adjusts itself based on performance.
A ruleset template is custom logic that you build yourself. You decide the condition and the action. Templates complement the standard automation, they don’t replace it. Both run daily alongside each other.
Can I link a template to a campaign that I created myself in Bol? Yes. Templates work for every campaign, regardless of whether it was created via Adyard or manually in Bol. You simply select the campaign in step 3 of the creation process.
How often does a template run? Daily. Adyard checks every day for all linked campaigns whether the conditions are met and executes the actions as soon as that’s the case.
Can I link a template to multiple campaigns at once? Yes. You select multiple campaigns at once when creating or editing the template. So you don’t have to recreate the same logic separately for every campaign.
What happens if a condition is only true for one day and then not anymore? The action is executed on the day the condition is met. If the condition is no longer met the next day, the action isn’t reversed. A paused keyword stays paused, a lowered bid stays lowered. Adyard only intervenes at the moment of the trigger, not after.
What if I set a time window of 14 days but only 10 days of data are available? Then the condition is evaluated based on the available data. If you’ve set minimum data days to 14, the template only becomes active once at least 14 days of data are available. Always set minimum data days to the same number as your longest time window to avoid inconsistencies.
Can I set a condition based on a percentage change, like "ACOS has increased by 20%"? No. Conditions work on absolute values, not on relative changes. You set a threshold, and the condition is true if the metric crosses above or below that threshold. If you want to respond to an increase, set an absolute ACOS threshold that matches what’s too high for your campaign.
What if two templates are linked to the same campaign and both adjust the bid on the same keyword? Both will run, in the order in which they execute. If template A lowers the bid by 10% and template B then raises the bid by 10%, the net result is a small decrease depending on the calculation order. Make sure templates linked to the same campaign don’t contain conflicting bid actions at the same level.
What if a template lowers a bid and the Bid Optimizer raises it on the same day? Both run daily but not at the same time. The last system that runs wins. If this leads to unwanted behavior, consider removing the campaign from the Bid Optimizer or adjusting the template so it only intervenes in situations the Bid Optimizer doesn’t catch.
Can I include the same campaign in multiple templates? Yes. There’s no limit to the number of templates that can be linked to one campaign. Keep your own overview of which templates are active on which campaigns to avoid unintended overlap.
How do I know if a template has run? All actions performed by a template are logged in the campaign activity log. There you can see for each campaign which changes were made, when they were executed, and by which template they were triggered.
Can I temporarily turn off a template without deleting it? Yes. You can deactivate a template. The template is kept with all its settings and campaign links, but it won’t run again until you activate it.
Can I edit a template after it’s already linked to campaigns? Yes. Changes to a template take effect immediately. The next time the template runs it uses the new settings. The campaign links stay intact.
What happens to a template if I delete a campaign? The template remains, but the link with the deleted campaign disappears. The template stays active on the other campaigns it’s linked to.
What if a template pauses a keyword that I just manually activated? If the condition is still met the next day, the template will pause the keyword again. If you want to prevent a template from interfering with a specific keyword, remove the campaign from the template link or adjust the condition so that keyword no longer meets it.
Can I set an action that permanently deletes a keyword? No. The strongest action at keyword level is archiving. An archived keyword is no longer active but remains visible in the history. Deletion is not available as an automatic action.
Can a template add a new keyword? No. Templates can modify or pause existing entities, but can’t create new keywords or campaigns. Adding keywords is the job of Keyword Harvesting.
What if the action sets a bid below the Bol minimum CPC? Bol does not accept bids below €0.01. If a calculated bid reduction ends up below this minimum, the bid is set to the minimum. Set your own min CPC in your rule set at a realistic level to prevent keywords from dropping out of the auction.
